Beech
A beechwood is a magical experience. I grew up in Texas where there aren’t any beech trees. As a woodworker I appreciated that beech is a noble wood, and I saw photos of precious slabs from ancient, burled specimen. I have come upon beechwoods with some very old trees in the Cévennes.
Walking through a thick forest of young beeches, it seems like one tree expressing itself, perhaps because there are rarely any other species in their company. The light filters through the soft green canopy to brush across cool gray trunks and bleached branches. I seem to always hear the sound of running water in beechwoods.
